Skimming and Scanning (Text Walk)How to Implement:
1. Have students pair skim the reading section looking for the following features: charts, pictures, bold words, headings, captions, questions, quotes. 2. Have students share their "first impressions" and record them in the first column on an anchor chart. 3. Have students scan looking for several facts. 4. Have students share these facts and record them in second column, "fast facts" of an anchor chart. 5. Discuss what this might mean about the content they will read. Record these thoughts in "final thoughts" in the third column. Purpose: Not only does this passage allow students to work with the text features, it also helps them predict what topic they will be reading about.
