Read-Alouds
A great way to model thinking and comprehension strategies is to use read-alouds or interactive read-alouds (where you stop and think-aloud).
Janet Allen and Patrick Daley complied an anthology of 35 pieces that are powerful read-alouds. All of the pieces are worth sharing with your students in some capacity. I have listed several pieces that will work well for modeling each comprehension strategy listed on this website. "Autobiography in Five Short Chapters" (Monitoring Comprehension) "The Escape" (Predicting) "Frozen Alive" (Questioning) "Tale-Tell Heart" (Visualizing) "The Open Window" (Inferring) "Dumb Crimes and Dumber Criminals!" (Determining Importance) "I Escaped a Violent Gang" (Summarizing/ Synthesizing) ***I did not list a title for activating background knowledge because you must make that choice depending on the information you wish to activate. |
